Missed an EDF filing? What to do now
Last reviewed
Missing a due date is common in the first months of a new rule. The useful thing to do is file now. Here is what happens at the bank and how to catch up.
File now: three steps
-
Make the month's EDF
Use the invoices you raised to foreign clients in that month. One EDF covers all of them.
-
Send it with a short note
Email your branch Trade Desk, the team that handles foreign exchange paperwork, from the address registered with the bank. Say plainly that it is late. A draft is below.
-
Keep the reply
Note the date you sent it and any acknowledgement the bank gives you. Then do the next month on time.
A note to send with a late EDF
Subject: EDF for invoices raised in [month and year], [your legal name] Dear Trade Desk, Please find attached my EDF, invoices and cover letter for services invoiced in [month and year]. I am sending it after the due date and would be grateful if you could process it. Please let me know if you need anything else from me. I will send the FIRA for each payment as it arrives. [Your name], [designation] [Legal name], PAN [PAN], IEC [IEC]
Fill in the parts in square brackets before you send it.
What happens if you miss a filing?
-
An open EDPMS entry
Your bank reports each export in RBI's Export Data Processing and Monitoring System (EDPMS). An invoice with no EDF, or an EDF with no payment matched to it, stays open there. -
Bank follow-up
The branch asks you for the missing EDF or for proof that the payment arrived. -
Closure against the IRM or FIRA
When the money arrives, the bank closes the entry against the inward remittance: the IRM number on your FIRA or credit advice. Filing late is better than not filing. -
The self-declaration route
Invoices up to ₹10 lakh each may be closed by the bank on your self-declaration; the declaration itself is still needed. Ask your branch what it accepts.
Filed the month, but forgot an invoice?
File a supplementary EDF for the same month. It lists only the invoice, or invoices, you left out, so the bank does not see the rest of the month twice. In EDF Filing, a supplementary pack is made from the month you already filed.
Keep these ready
- The invoices for every month you have not filed yet.
- The FIRA for each payment received. A FIRA (Foreign Inward Remittance Advice) is the bank's advice for a foreign payment, with its IRM number, the bank's reference that closes the export entry.
- Any email in which your bank told you which format or channel it wants.
To stay ahead of the next date, the deadline calendar lists every due date to December 2027.
Common questions
I missed the due date. Can I still file?
Yes. File now. Filing late is better than not filing. Send the month's EDF to your branch Trade Desk with a short note, and ask whether the branch needs anything else.
What happens if I do not file at all?
The invoice stays open in EDPMS, RBI's register of export bills, and your branch follows up for the missing EDF or for proof that the payment arrived. This describes bank practice as of October 2026, not the law.
I filed the month but forgot one invoice. What now?
File a supplementary EDF for that month listing only the invoice you missed. In EDF Filing this is a supplementary pack, made from the same month.
Should I wait for RBI's FAQ before catching up?
If you are a business, no. If you are an individual with a contract of a personal nature, RBI said on 7 October 2026 that you are not included, but the text has not changed yet. Keep your invoices and FIRAs ready either way.
EDF Filing is a document generator; you remain the declarant. Nothing here is legal or tax advice.
