EDF for freelancers paid by Upwork, Fiverr or direct clients
Last reviewed
If you freelance for clients outside India, the new monthly form may reach you too. Here is what it is, how often you file it, and what to keep ready, in plain words.
Does the EDF apply to freelancers?
The notification covers every exporter of services in India, and that includes freelancers. On 7 October 2026 RBI said that individuals with contracts of a personal nature are not included, and that FAQs are coming. The text has not changed yet.
If you invoice as a business, or you are not sure where you stand, plan to file. The three questions at the end of this page give a first reading, and Does the EDF apply to me? goes through each case.
Do I really fill a form every month?
“har month manually form bharna bhi time consuming hai”
One form a month, yes, but only for months in which you invoice a foreign client. One EDF covers all of that month's invoices, to every client. You do not file one per payment or one per invoice.
It is due 30 days after the month ends. For October 2026 invoices, that is 30 Nov 2026. The deadline calendar lists every month to December 2027.
Upwork, Fiverr and direct wires: which bank do I file with?
You file with your AD bank (Authorised Dealer bank): the bank that receives the foreign currency. How you are paid decides which bank that is.
A client wires money straight to your Indian bank
Your bank received the foreign currency, so it is your AD bank. File there.
Upwork or Fiverr pays out to your bank account
Check the credit advice. If it shows a foreign inward remittance, your bank is your AD bank. If it shows a rupee credit from an Indian payment partner, ask your bank in writing.
Wise, Skydo, PayPal or Payoneer pays you in rupees
Banks were giving different answers in October 2026. Ask your branch in writing whether it expects the EDF from you.

What to gather each month
- Every invoice you raised to a foreign client that month: number, date, amount and currency.
- Each client's name and country, and a one-line description of the work.
- Your PAN, your IEC (Importer Exporter Code), your bank's AD code and your account number.
- A purpose code for the work, such as P0802 for software consultancy. Your bank can confirm the right one.
- Later, once paid: the FIRA for each payment. A FIRA (Foreign Inward Remittance Advice) is the bank's advice for a foreign payment, with its IRM number, the bank's reference for that payment.
How do I send it?
Email the signed form from the address registered with your bank to your branch Trade Desk, the team that handles foreign exchange paperwork, or to your relationship manager (RM). Some branches want a printed copy signed in ink. Ask which they accept, and keep the reply.
Common questions
Do freelancers have to file an EDF?
The notification covers every exporter of services, including freelancers. At its press conference on 7 October 2026, RBI said that individuals with contracts of a personal nature are not included in the reporting requirement, and that FAQs are coming. The text of the notification has not changed, so the 30 Nov 2026 deadline for October invoices stands until the FAQ says otherwise. If you invoice as a business, or you are not sure, plan to file.
Do I file one EDF for every payment?
No. You file one EDF a month, and it covers all the invoices you raised to foreign clients in that month. Months with no foreign invoices need nothing.
I am paid through Upwork or Fiverr. Which bank do I file with?
With your AD bank, the bank that receives the foreign currency. If the payout reaches your Indian account as a foreign remittance, that is your bank. If it arrives as rupees from a payment partner, ask your bank in writing whether it expects the EDF from you.
What do I need to gather each month?
Your invoices for the month with number, date, amount and currency; each client's name and country; a short description of the work; your PAN, IEC, AD code and account number; and, once paid, the FIRA or credit advice for each payment.
EDF Filing is a document generator; you remain the declarant. Nothing here is legal or tax advice.
